Solid State Crystal Structures and Surfaces
Making Matter: the atomic structure of materials
This site, at the Institut Laue-Langevin, includes wonderful virtual reality structures of metallic, ionic, and covalent solids. (You may need to install a VRML plug-in to view the structures; if so click here to download a viewer. Restart your computer after installing the plug-in.)

Crystal Lattice Structures
The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory website  includes static graphics and java applets for more than 250 alloys and compounds.  This site is a real gem.

Semiconductors
These java applets, developed at SUNY Buffalo,  demonstrate all the major concepts needed to understand semiconductors.

Miller Indices
Includes an animated GIF that steps through many planes.

Surface Explorer
Generates images of different surfaces, based on your input of the lattice type and Miller indices.

Surface Science Tutorials
Includes a discussion of Woods notation.
