The Central Coast Secondary Science

Professional Learning Community

The goal of this community is:

“to organize the work of qualified teachers so they can collaborate with their colleagues in developing strong learning communities that will sustain them as they become more accomplished teachers” (NCTAF, 2003)

The program is sponsored by the California Science Project Teacher Retention Initiative (TRI) and it is part of a National Research Study. The Central Coast Institution of Higher Education is the California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo.

What is your commitment?

• 10 hr Science Literacy meeting in June at the Souza Center:

Monday June 25 dinner (4-8 pm) and June 26 Literacy for our students (8-3 pm)

• 40 to 80 hours Summer 2007 Institute (July 30-Aug 3^rd and/or Aug 6^th-10^th)

• 36 hours of Academic year program (monthly meetings in SMB)

After school Monday meetings from 4-8 pm @ Souza Center- TBD

• 24 hour project work in focus group:

This is a follow-up project on your own time. We use the Lesson Study model and requires the application of content workshop in the classroom with a ateam of teachers. Twelve hours need to be finished by December and the rest in May.

This are your regular science or articulation meetings

• Participate in surveys

What do you get?

• Access to a local professional 6^th to 16^th learning community.
• Stipends: $ 1900 as follows:
• $200 for Science Literacy meeting in June;
• $500 per week for summer 2007 workshops;
• $600 for work completed by December 2007;
• $600 for work completed by May 2008.

• Matching grant to attend the CSTA meeting in Long Beach
• Develop documentation that supports your PD plan
